The Man Who Fought Soviet Evil, & WON !!!

It’s difficult enough to survive in the music world without the added pressure of fighting antagonistic political forces.

But it’s tougher when that Political Power is the crushing fist of Soviet tyranny.

This story will seem to be a work of fiction, but I assure you, it is as true as the rising of the Sun.

His name is Vlado(Jazzy) Kolenic, & his life is a testimony of courage & endurance.

Born In Bondage

Growing up on the banks of the Danube during the 1960’s in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, Vlado never knew true freedom as a child.

Despite his disadvantage, he was able to overcome the drudgery of communist bondage to form a rock band with his buddies & make history. As the lead singer, Vlado wasted no time making a name for himself & his music mates.

By the late 1970's, his band, TAKTICI, topped European music charts surpassing such acts as Queen, the Bee Gees and ABBA.

Yes, Vlado Kolenic was a ROCK STAR in his country!

Trouble On The Horizon

As great as all of this sounds, he was still a very troubled soul, longing to breathe the independent air of America, just as all his countrymen dreamed about for many years. His great success in music only brought greater challenges from the communist government there, as they scrutinized every aspect of his band’s operation.

The Czech officials levied tight restrictions on their music, censoring their lyrics & performances. Worse yet, when the government wanted to get their message to the band more forcefully, they would send thugs to break down their doors at home & beat them into submission.

As a final insult to these brave boys, their government cancelled TAKTICI’S concert tour of England, & Vlado had ENOUGH!

With no fear of reprisal by his captors, he forged his passport & defected to the United States with his band & family. The immediate cost to Vlado was enormous, because he could not benefit from any of his musical success once he left the Soviet Bloc Nation. Czechoslovakia confiscated all the band’s wealth & took their songs off the market.

Although his pockets were practically empty, he considered himself RICH in freedom.

When Ronald Reagan destroyed the Soviet Empire, Mr. Kolenic’s homeland splintered into two FREE nations, & TAKTICI’S songs were back on the airwaves for a whole new generation of fans to enjoy.

He remains a legend in his native land, & returns there to perform for his people from time to time.

Since his adventures in those days, Vlado has resumed his musical career as a prolific songwriter/composer/producer and multi-instrumentalist. His resume includes several #1 and Top 20 songs, motion picture soundtracks, childrens’ TV shows, jingles and countless recording credits in a wide range of musical genres.

He has over 100 songs published throughout the world, and there is even a tribute band in Europe performing his songs.

Today, you can find Vlado still making music & running his restaurant, Bettola, in New York City.

So much has happened in the exciting life of this rocking freedom warrior, one article cannot cover his experiences, so we will reveal more from Vlado in another installment.
